The Lamp
What started out as a project to upcycle leftover resin from other works, became a series of creations known as mosaic. This lovely design kept coming back to us and one day, with an extra mosaic bowl, we flipped it over on top of one of our lamp bases. Hey! It’s so cute. That was when we got the idea.
It took a couple more weeks of experimenting — the resin has to be translucent enough to let light pass through, yet still create this cosy, vintage, warm pop of colour reminiscent of stained glass (did you know Uncle Ray worked with stained glass in the past?)
The shape has to be thin at its edges and sturdy but not too thick, if not the lamp won’t be bright enough. Our original prototype has the resin carved to an impressive thickness of 2mm at its edges to fit into the groove — but we decided to save Uncle Ray the effort (of at least 2 hours hand carving) by designing a 3D-printed fitting that secures the resin top to the base snugly.
We’re chuffed with this fun and cheerful lamp, our first collaboration (finally!) as father and daughter — after about 5 years of resin art and woodworking and doing everything together for @handsdesignsg and @eden__living 🌈
