About the artist
I am Nam Ui-jin (남의진), a ceramic artist and owner of Window Store (창문상점) in Jeju Island. I mainly use the Buncheong technique to create tableware such as dishes and decorative objects.
The motto of Window Store (창문상점) and my personal work is "Beyond the Window." When gazing out a window, not only do we look at what is outside while contemplating what we see, but through admiring and using ceramics and crafts in our daily life, I hope you’ll experience the touch and feel akin to opening the window and stepping outside yourself.
Buncheong (분청) is a technique widely used during the Joseon Dynasty, where white slip (liquid white clay) is applied over dark clay as a finishing process. Among the different methods of buncheong, I primarily use the deombeong (덤벙) technique, which involves dipping the piece into white slip and then removing it. The natural flow and hand marks left in this process give the pieces a unique and captivating charm.
For this pop-up event, I will be showcasing not only wheel-thrown pieces but also hand-built vases carefully stacked and shaped by hand. As you see and touch these ceramics firsthand, I hope you feel the beauty and charm of these buncheong works!
